Slovenia: Ljubljana, the lakes & Julian Alps
Welcome to Slovenia, a small European country with a big heart and a rich cultural history. In pocket-sized, historic Ljubljana, roam around the medieval hilltop castle, take in eye-catching Art Nouveau architecture and stroll across the curious three-pronged bridge, designed by Jože Plečnik. Much of the country is smothered in forests and dotted with freshwater lakes, and you’ll be immersed in unspoilt nature as soon as you leave the capital. Lake Bled is jade-green with a small islet and church in the middle; paddle out to ring the church’s wishing bell, constructed in 1534, and then reward yourself with a cream-laden Bled cake. Lake Bohinj, in contrast, is turquoise and ringed by cycle tracks, presided over by the dramatic peaks of the Vogel mountain. The pristine Julian Alps are made for adventure; hiking and biking trails in Triglav National Park lead to gushing waterfalls and glacial lakes.
Slovenia: Soča River & Skocjan caves
Driving through the thrilling, high-altitude Vrsic Pass and along the unfeasibly blue waters of the Soča River, you’ll start to get a measure of Slovenia’s wild beauty. Arriving in the Soča Valley, it’s time to let loose, from thrilling mountain biking and kayaking, to meditative fly-fishing and wildflower wanders. A highlight is a guided foraging forest hike, learning how farmers, shepherds and herbalists live side-by-side with nature, as well as meeting artisan cheese makers – and getting to taste their produce. Spend your last few days in Slovenia driving south to explore the showstopper Skocjan caves, a series of vast underground caverns that seem lifted from the pages of Lord of the Rings.
Croatia: Istria & Plitvice Lakes National Park
You’ve arrived in Istria, northern Croatia, smoothly moving from one European country to another by private transfer. This is a place to admire the region’s effortless charm: medieval hilltop villages that rival Tuscany, delicious food and wine, and a rugged, pine-clad coastline. Try a hands-on cookery class, or visit a local farm for olive oil tastings. Both Rovinj and Pula are all about the history, from Pula’s Roman amphitheatre to Rovinj’s picturesque beauty found in its whirl of winding streets. From Istria, meander down to Šibenik. On your way, stop and admire the geological wonder of the Plitvice Lakes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. When you reach Šibenik, you’ll also have the chance to visit the Krka waterfalls, made up of seven falls. While you’re here, take pause in this scenic spot, dipping your toes in the water and trying some tasty local gastronomic treats.
Croatia: Split & Hvar
The beautiful harbour city of Split is a place of meandering streets, hidden churches and charming squares, where our expert guide will bring its layers of history to life. A highlight is Diocletian’s Palace, an exquisitely-preserved ancient Roman palace and fortress. From Split, take to the seas on a private yacht charter to the island of Hvar, enjoying a leisurely sail through the secluded bays and lagoons of the Pakleni Islands. Arriving in Hvar’s harbour, you’ll quickly see why the Greeks, Romans and Venetians were enchanted by this isle, swathed in olive trees. Today, Hvar draws an upmarket crowd which enjoys its buzzy piazzas and harbour; for more off-radar experiences, try inland bike rides, scenic picnics and seafood feasts.
Croatia: Dubrovnik
Your final stop in Croatia takes in the lofty grandeur of Dubrovnik, encircled by imposing city walls. You’ll see a side that most tourists won’t uncover, heading into the old town and leaving the crowds behind with our local guide, dropping by little-known churches, through secret arches and out onto dramatic viewpoints. Go further into the surrounding countryside to discover oak forest hikes and secluded beaches, or head out to sea to find oyster beds and idyllic swim spots. Make the most of Dubrovnik’s fantastic foodie scene, trying everything from farm-to-table to fine dining.
Montenegro: Perast, Kotor
Say hello to Montenegro, a small but beautiful country characterised by a pristine coastline, forested inlands and soaring mountains. With settlements dating back to the 7th century and sculpted by the Illyrians, Romans and Ottomans, Montenegro is a great option for history buffs. You’ll have private tours of cultural heritage towns like Perast, where gleaming palaces and churches reveal exceptional views at every turn, including the romance of the island chapel, Our Lady of the Rocks. In Kotor, a fortified medieval UNESCO World Heritage Site, wander the labyrinth-like old town with an expert guide to show you its historic treasures. Spend time on the serene waters of Lake Skadar and its lush islets, alive with birdlife. Lastly, board a private boat for a drift along the Bay of Kotor, a stunning finale and a chance to reflect on the journey you’ve taken.
